TREK FOR SMS

A Fundraising Expedition Supporting Rare Families

Trek for SMS is a collaborative fundraising campaign created to support PRISMS (Parents and Researchers Interested in Smith–Magenis Syndrome). This expedition brings together mothers, supporters, and advocates to raise funds for research and family support systems serving individuals living with Smith–Magenis Syndrome (SMS).

SMS is a rare genetic condition affecting approximately 1 in 15,000 children born, characterized by developmental disability, sleep disturbance, significant behavioral challenges, and medical complications involving the lungs, heart, kidneys, and brain. Families impacted by SMS often provide lifelong care while navigating limited resources and awareness.

The Trek

In January 2027, a small international team will undertake a high-altitude trek in Tanzania in partnership with Tazama, an ethical, community-centered trekking company. The climb will include three mothers of adult children with Smith–Magenis Syndrome—Cally Bauman (Australia), Connie Bessette (New Hampshire), and Gail Reiner (California)—joined by a small group of supportive participants.

Why We Trek

This expedition is not about conquest—it is about commitment. Each step taken helps fund PRISMS’ work in:

  • Advancing SMS research

  • Providing education and resources for families

  • Strengthening long-term support networks for children and adults living with SMS

Who This Is For

Trek for SMS invites support from anyone connected to or moved by:
